En el caso de los suelos de grano fino, la presencia de agua gratley afecta a su respuesta ingenieril. El agua afecta a la interacci\u00f3n entre los granos minerales, y esto puede afectar a su plasticidad (definida en t\u00e9rminos generales como la capacidad del suelo para moldearse) y a su <em>cohesividad<\/em> (su capacidad para adherirse). Mientras que las arenas son no pl\u00e1sticas y no cohesivas (sin cohesi\u00f3n), las arcillas son pl\u00e1sticas y cohesivas. Adem\u00e1s, un porcentaje relativamente peque\u00f1o de finos puede formar contactos estables entre los granos gruesos, proporcionando resistencia y rigidez al suelo. El Sistema Uniforme de Clasificaci\u00f3n de Suelos (SUCS) reconoce estas observaciones, separa claramente los finos de los suelos gruesos, capta la importancia de los finos en los suelos gruesos, e incluso aborda si esos finos son de alta o baja plasticidad (Santamarina et al, 2002).<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Sin embargo, es importante se\u00f1alar que la presencia de incluso una peque\u00f1a cantidad de minerales de arcilla (part\u00edculas cristalinas muy peque\u00f1as, de menos de 0,002 mm de tama\u00f1o, muy activas electroqu\u00edmicamente) puede afectar notablemente a las propiedades de ingenier\u00eda de la masa de suelo. A partir de numerosas investigaciones, se reconoci\u00f3 que a medida que aumenta la cantidad de arcilla, el comportamiento del suelo se rige cada vez m\u00e1s por las propiedades de la arcilla (Holtz <em>et al<\/em>, 2011; Mitchell, 1976; Monkul &amp; Ozden, 2007). Sin embargo, en realidad nos referimos a <em>suelos que contienen suficientes minerales arcillosos como para afectar a su comportamiento en ingenier\u00eda<\/em>. Esta simplificaci\u00f3n debe entenderse para evitar confusiones.<\/p><p><br \/>La influencia de la presencia de minerales arcillosos en el comportamiento de la masa del suelo fue ampliamente estudiada por varios autores en las \u00faltimas cuatro d\u00e9cadas. Entre los trabajos que considero m\u00e1s relevantes, cabe destacar los siguientes: 1) Lupini <em>et al<\/em> (1981), quienes mencionaron que el comportamiento residual de corte cambia significativamente a medida que aumenta el contenido de arcilla de los suelos cohesivos y se produce un cambio en el mecanismo de corte; y 2) Skempton (1985), quien mencion\u00f3 que si la fracci\u00f3n de arcilla es menor al 25%, el suelo se comporta de manera muy similar a un suelo grueso (arena o limo).<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Para explicar la influencia de la fracci\u00f3n arcillosa en el comportamiento del suelo, podr\u00eda considerarse el modelo bif\u00e1sico propuesto por Mitchell (1976). Por lo tanto, <em>V<sub>v <\/sub><\/em>+ <em>V<sub>c<\/sub><\/em> es el volumen de los espacios intergranulares. En ese modelo se supone que la contribuci\u00f3n de los finos (<u>part\u00edculas de arcilla<\/u>) al sostenimiento de las fuerzas internas es secundaria si la cantidad de finos se mantiene dentro de un cierto margen. En cambio, la matriz de grano m\u00e1s grueso es dominante en la transferencia de fuerzas de fricci\u00f3n de contacto (Biscontin et al, 2007).<br \/><br \/>Siguiendo el modelo bif\u00e1sico, los suelos saturados que contienen una mezcla de suelos cohesivos y granulares pueden idealizarse como una combinaci\u00f3n de las dos fases: (1) la fase arcilla-agua, denominada <em>matriz arcillosa<\/em>; y (2) la fase <em>granular<\/em>. En estas condiciones, los granos m\u00e1s gruesos se comportan como inclusiones r\u00edgidas en la fase arcilla-agua, y proporcionan una contribuci\u00f3n insignificante al comportamiento global del suelo, que s\u00f3lo est\u00e1 controlado por la matriz arcillosa. Este comportamiento podr\u00eda definirse como <em>comportamiento como arcilla<\/em>. Por otro lado, si la fracci\u00f3n de arcilla saturada es peque\u00f1a, los granos m\u00e1s gruesos est\u00e1n en contacto mutuo, y la matriz de arcilla se entrelaza en los huecos del esqueleto granular. Este l\u00edmite es, en general, consistente con lo publicado en la literatura respecto a la influencia de las part\u00edculas de arcilla en el comportamiento de los suelos.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>En base a la informaci\u00f3n presentada anteriormente, es evidente la necesidad de considerar el comportamiento esperado del suelo para llevar a cabo una caracterizaci\u00f3n geot\u00e9cnica adecuada.
