Ingenier\u00eda Geot\u00e9cnica es una Especializaci\u00f3n de la Ingenier\u00eda Civil. Por lo tanto, es importante tener claro qu\u00e9 es la Ingenier\u00eda Civil. La Ingenier\u00eda Civil es la disciplina que incluye el an\u00e1lisis, dise\u00f1o y construcci\u00f3n de una gran cantidad de estructuras y sistemas, muchos de los cuales est\u00e1n construidos sobre, dentro o con suelo o roca (Mitchell &amp; Soga, 2005). y <em>logos<\/em> = estudio, tratado, ciencia) y <em>tecnolog\u00eda<\/em> (del griego <em>tecno<\/em> = arte, t\u00e9cnica; y <em>logos<\/em> = estudio, tratado, ciencia). De acuerdo a esto, el <em>suelo<\/em> (al igual que el agua, el acero o el concreto, por ejemplo) es considerado como un material ingenieril, cuyas propiedades y comportamiento debe ser comprendidos para construir con, dentro o sobre el mismo.<\/li><li><em>Mec\u00e1nica de Rocas<\/em>. De manera similar al caso anterior, incluye la aplicaci\u00f3n de los principios b\u00e1sicos de la mec\u00e1nica a las rocas, considerando las mismas como un material ingenieril.<\/li><li><em>Ingenier\u00eda de Fundaciones<\/em>. Esta rama aplica la Ingenier\u00eda Geol\u00f3gica, la Mec\u00e1nica de Suelos, la Mec\u00e1nica de Rocas, y la Ingenier\u00eda Estructural, al dise\u00f1o y construcci\u00f3n de fundaciones para proyectos civiles. El objetivo fundamental de esta disciplina, es que el Ingeniero Geot\u00e9cnico sea capaz de predecir el comportamiento y la respuesta del suelo o roca de fundaci\u00f3n, ante las solicitaciones evaluar su comportamiento ante solicitaciones externas asociadas a proyectos civiles.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section Ingenier\u00eda Civil es, b\u00e1sicamente, la disciplina que provee y mantiene la infraestructura que hace posible nuestra civilizaci\u00f3n. Y en este contexto, cabe entonces preguntarse \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 es importante la Ingenier\u00eda Geot\u00e9cnica?<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Si nos ponemos a pensar, la raz\u00f3n es simple: no es posible dise\u00f1ar o construir ninguna estructura civil terrestre o extraterrestre, sin considerar los suelos y\/o rocas de fundaci\u00f3n. El performance, econom\u00eda y seguridad de cualquier estructura civil, est\u00e1n afectados, e incluso controlados, por sus fundaciones (Holtz <em>et al<\/em>, 2011). Veamos algunos ejemplos.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>El suelo y las rocas son frecuentemente empleados como materiales de construcci\u00f3n, debido a que los mismos constituyen el material de construcci\u00f3n m\u00e1s barato posible. Sin embargo, sus propiedades ingenieriles de resistencia y compresibilidad son frecuentemente pobres, por lo que deben tomarse medidas para densificarlos, incrementar su resistencia, o incluso reforzarlos para que puedan comportarse satisfactoriamente. Terraplenes de carreteras y ferrocarriles, aer\u00f3dromos, presas de tierra y roca, diques y acueductos, son ejemplos de estructuras de tierra, de las que el Ingeniero Geot\u00e9cnico es responsable por su dise\u00f1o y construcci\u00f3n.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Por otro lado, dado que gran parte de la superficie terrestre est\u00e1 cubierta por suelo (o agua), las rocas son importantes para estructuras subterr\u00e1neas, tales como t\u00faneles, estructuras de almacenamiento de petr\u00f3leo, y minas, por nombrar algunas. Sin embargo, algunos problemas asociados a rocas ocurren tambi\u00e9n en superficie, como es el caso de \u00a0fundaciones de edificios y presas apoyadas en roca, excavaciones profundas en el lecho rocoso, o estabilizaci\u00f3n de taludes rocosos.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>En los \u00faltimos 20 o 30 a\u00f1os, los ingenieros geot\u00e9cnicos han venido participando con cada vez mayor protagonismo en la soluci\u00f3n de problemas ambientales, particularmente de aquellos en los que suelos y rocas est\u00e1n involucrados.
