Asimismo, resulta evidente que los valores de <em>LL<\/em> y de <em>Actividad <\/em>son directamente proporcionales a <em>S<sub>e<\/sub><\/em>, lo cual implica que arcillas con mayor <em>S<sub>e<\/sub><\/em>, tendr\u00e1n una reacci\u00f3n m\u00e1s pronunciada ante la presencia de agua. Es por eso que, por ejemplo, el potencial de hinchamiento de una arcilla montmorillon\u00edtica (de elevada <em>S<sub>e<\/sub><\/em>) es m\u00e1s alto que el de una kaolinita (con un valor bajo de <em>S<sub>e<\/sub><\/em>).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section <em>S<sub>e<\/sub><\/em> es el propuesto por Santamarina <em>et al<\/em> (2002), el cual est\u00e1 basado en la informaci\u00f3n obtenida de un ensayo de granulometr\u00eda por tamizado e uniformidad <em>C<sub>u<\/sub><\/em>, la densidad del agua <em>\u03c1<sub>\u03c9<\/sub><\/em>, la gravedad espec\u00edfica de las part\u00edculas s\u00f3lidas <em>Gs<\/em>, y el di\u00e1metro medio de la muestra <em>D<sub>50<\/sub><\/em>, es posible estimar el valor de <em>S<sub>e<\/sub><\/em> para una muestra de suelo.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Por otro lado, Farrar &amp; Coleman (1967) desarrollaron una expresi\u00f3n para estimar <em>S<sub>e<\/sub><\/em> (en m<sup>2<\/sup>\/g) en funci\u00f3n de <em>LL<\/em>, a partir de an\u00e1lisis realizados sobre arcillas brit\u00e1nicas con valores de <em>LL<\/em> variables entre 28 y 121:<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">Se= 1,8LL &#8211; 34<\/p><p>Aunque aproximadas, estas ecuaciones permiten tener una idea del orden de magnitud de <em>S<sub>e<\/sub><\/em> para una muestra de suelo. Los finos rellenan los espacios de los poros entre las part\u00edculas m\u00e1s grandes, controlan la permeabilidad del suelo, determinan si una determinada condici\u00f3n de carga es drenada o no drenada, y aumentan el umbral de deformaci\u00f3n el\u00e1stica y de degradaci\u00f3n de los suelos. Adem\u00e1s, un porcentaje relativamente peque\u00f1o de finos puede formar puentes estabilizadores entre los contactos de part\u00edculas m\u00e1s gruesas, que proporcionan una resistencia y rigidez significativas al suelo (por ejemplo, el caso del loess). El Sistema Unificado de Clasificaci\u00f3n de Suelos reconoce estas observaciones, separa claramente los finos de los suelos gruesos, capta la importancia de los finos en los suelos gruesos, e incluso aborda si esos finos son de alta o baja plasticidad, es decir, de alta o baja superficie espec\u00edfica (Santamirna <em>et al<\/em>, 2002).<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>En base a lo anterior, resulta evidente que el comportamiento del terreno depender\u00e1 de la cantidad de part\u00edculas de arcilla, es decir, de la fracci\u00f3n coloidal <em>FF <\/em>(part\u00edculas de tama\u00f1o inferior a 2 \u03bcm) que contenga el suelo. As\u00ed, adem\u00e1s del perfil de variaci\u00f3n de <em>S<sub>e<\/sub><\/em> con la profundidad, es posible emplear el criterio originalmente propuesto por Mitchell (1976), y complementado posteriormente por Lupini <em>et al<\/em> (1981) y Boiero (2021), seg\u00fan el cual, desde el punto de vista pr\u00e1ctico (es decir, para ser aplicado en proyectos geot\u00e9cnicos rutinarios), cuando <em>FF<\/em> &gt; 20% el suelo tendr\u00e1 un comportamiento \u201ccomo arcilla\u201d, debido a la presencia de suficientes part\u00edculas con elevada <em>Se<\/em> como para hacer prevalecer las fuerzas electroqu\u00edmicas en el comportamiento macro de la masa de suelo; y para <em>FF<\/em> &lt; 20% el suelo tendr\u00e1 un comportamiento \u201ccomo arena\u201d, totalmente regido por la fase granular.
